Boat captain sees a cat being thrown off a bridge – and instantly drops everything to save her

Imagine going on a boat trip and suddenly noticing some “airborne object” spinning in the air and ending up in the water with a “splat”. What would you think?

Well, Captain Jordan Smith’s first thought was that is was a bag of trash. Smith owns Let’s Fish Destin Charters in Destin, Florida, and over the years he has seen a lot of people throwing trash bags off bridges, so he wasn’t really surprised when he saw this black object spinning in the air. But then, once it was in the water, he noticed it was moving.

Smith approached the object with his boat and that was when he realized that it was an animal; more specifically, a scared cat with beautiful, orange eyes.

“I saw these little orange eyes looking at me and I reached down with my dip net and got it,” he told a local news outlet. “I picked it up and it latched on and didn’t want to let go. [Her] little heart was beating really fast.”

Smith knew that he had to take the little cat somewhere safe until he finished his charter. So he took the cat to HarborWalk, a beachfront area with shops and restaurants, where a friend of his worked and asked if she could keep the cat until he was back. His friend, who wanted to save the little kitty as much as Smith did, took it to the vet to make sure she hadn’t suffered any major injuries.

The vet found out that the cat had been pregnant but miscarried during the incident, but other than that she would be fine. Smith went to the vet to check on her and decided that he wanted to take her home when the whole thing as over and she had recovered.

“I’ve got a dog at my house. She’s my princess. So as long as my dog’s OK with her then, we’re going to keep her around,” he said at the time.

It seems that it all worked pretty well for them. Aspen, the Husky-German shepherd mix that Smith called “his princess”, didn’t seem to be bothered by the new family member, Miracle, as Smith named the rescue cat. On the contrary, Miracle and Aspen have since been friends and they seem to be having fun together, enjoying each other’s company.

Smith has since shared pictures on social media of him and his cat and dog, which proves that taking the poor kitty home wasn’t a bad decision at all- they have become a big family by now.

The authorities tried to find out who had thrown the little cat off the bridge and track them down, but, unfortunately, their search proved unsuccessful.

While it is sad that the cruel people who did this to a vulnerable animal will not be punished for what they did, it is heartwarming to know that there are still good and compassionate people out there who would go above and beyond to help an animal in need.
