Meet Sarge, the German shepherd caring for injured and orphaned animals

What’s not to love about German shepherds? They are majestic, agile and fantastic companions for adults and children alike.

In fact, the German shepherd is among the dog breeds most praised for their intelligence. There is little that these brainiac pups can’t learn, given the right training at an early age. That is why they are so commonly given jobs such as herding, therapy, guiding the blind, search and rescue, and even become official police officers!

Most people know about these types of jobs for German Shepards and have even seen them in action. But there are so many other, more unusual jobs and activities that these amazing dogs have taken on. A few examples of these are tracking, dock diving, protection equipment testing and barn hunting.

This article from the German Shepard Guide, titled “Work, Sports and Activities For The German Shepard” outlines almost all of the typical and unusual things this breed can do. Check it out and come back to this story to find out about one dog with a job that is surely not on the list.

There are some amazing things on that list that you would never guess. But one job definitely got left out! You have probably never heard of a German Shepard that helps rehabilitate injured or orphaned animals.

This is Sarge, he lives in a regular home out in Ohio, surrounded by nature. The woods all around are home to all kinds of wildlife, especially deer. Sarge lives a pretty normal life from day to day, but every so often he gets called upon to step up for those in need.

His fellow humans are caretakers who introduce him to animals who have come upon hard times. Most often these are fawns, or baby deer, who have found themselves in need of extra care. This is Sarge’s job and it clearly makes him proud!

He has made friends with many of the guests who have stayed in his home and keeps them company while they work up the strength to return to the wild. As you can see in these pictures, he never hesitates to share his food, blankets or even his favorite napping spots.

The fawn in the picture below looks particularly comfortable, all thanks to Sarge!

How adorable! These friends of different species are just the sweetest thing. It’s easy to tell that the young deer are safe and happy sharing a living space with Sarge.

In nature, fawns usually stay with their mothers for a year or more before they are strong enough to fend for themselves, so when something happens to separate them from their parent’s watchful eye someone must step in. It’s a lucky thing that Sarge has such a big heart!

What an admirable and giving dog! Imagine a world where human beings are as willing to help and share with others in need.
